Clinic for Fixed and Removable Prosthodontics and Dental Material Science, Center for Dental and Oral Medicine and Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery, University of Zurich, Switzerland
Christoph Hämmerle is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Fixed and Removable Prosthodontics and Dental Material Science at the University of Zurich, Switzerland. He is certified in prosthodontics as well as in periodontics. His focus is on the comprehensive treatment of complex, partially edentulous patients applying all available options of reconstructive dentistry including dental implants.
Prof. Hämmerle’s main scientific interests encompass biological and prosthetic aspects of fixed reconstructions on teeth and implants as part of the overall restorative treatment concept.
In the area of guided bone regeneration the group has developed and refined treatment modalities by applying basic experimental research as well as clinical evaluations in patients. A recent focus in the area of bone and soft tissue reconstruction is on the development of techniques involving growth factors and appropriate carrier materials and the development of new membranes for GBR. In addition, methods for augmentation of soft tissues are being investigated including the development of grafting materials and the assessment of volume changes over time.
Regarding the fabrication of fixed prosthesis on teeth and implants various ceramic materials are being tested in the laboratory and investigated in clinical studies. In addition, new technologies for digital data acquisition and prosthesis fabrication are studied in vitro and in vivo.
Prof. Hämmerle is a member of various scientific organizations. Presently, he is President of the European Association for Osseointegration (EAO), Board Member of the Swiss Society of Implantology, President of the Osteology Foundation, and Chairman of the ITI Section of Switzerland.
He has served on the organizing committees of several national and international conferences including: Swiss Society of Periodontology, European Association for Osseointegration (including chairmanship of the 15th Annual Congress of the EAO 2006 in Zurich, co-chairmanship of the 1st and 2nd Consensus Conferences of the EAO in 2006 and 2009), Implantologie Aktuell, ITI World Symposium.
He has published numerous scientific and clinical articles and serves on the review boards of several scientific journals in the field.
