Daniel Thoma is an Assistant Professor at the Clinic for Fixed and Removable Prosthodontics and Dental Material Science at the University of Zurich, Switzerland. He graduated in 2000 as DMD at the School of Dental Medicine, University of Basel, Switzerland and received his "doctor medicinae dentium" (Dr. med. dent.) from the same University in 2005. Following a 4-year period as full time associate in a private practice, he completed a 3-year training in Reconstructive Dentistry at the Clinic for Fixed and Removable Prosthodontics and Dental Material Science at the University of Zurich, Switzerland. From 2007 to 2008, he was the recipient of an ITI scholarship and spent a year as an ITI scholar at the Department of Periodontics, University of Texas, Health Science Center, San Antonio, USA (Director: Prof. Dr. D. Cochran). Since 2008, he is a full-time Assistant Professor at the Clinic for Fixed and Removable Prosthodontics and Dental Material Science at the University of Zurich, Switzerland.
His focus is on the comprehensive treatment of complex, partially edentulous patients applying all available options of reconstructive dentistry including dental implants.
Dr. Thoma’s main scientific interests encompass biological aspects of fixed reconstructions on teeth and implants with special focus on preclinical experiments. He is mainly interested in the development of alternative treatment concepts and materials in the field of bone regeneration using growth factors and membranes, and the development of alternative devices for augmentation of soft tissue in the oral cavity.
In 2008, he received the Hans-R. Mühlemann Research Prize of the Swiss Society of Periodontology (SSP), Switzerland for his work on soft tissue augmentation using collagen-based matrices.
Dr. Thoma is a member of the ITI (International Team for Implantology), the Swiss Society of Reconstructive Dentistry (SSRD), and the Swiss Society of Dentistry (SSO).
